Check and select the city you live in.

Go to the “Pets” section and do a search for “turtles”.

You might get lucky and even find one for free or for adoption at a minimal cost.

There are tons of animal listings that are updated throughout the day. So if you don’t find one today, keep checking!

You should try to find an adoption or a reptile rescue first. NJ is big so it should be easy to find something.

Petfinder.com is a great place. If you find yourself unwilling to drive at least 4 hours (round-trip) for a pet, then you aren’t willing to take the responsibility and should not do this.

I live in Cape May and help run a terrapin rescue and release program. Turtles are illegal to sell in NJ so if you want one you will have to get it through the Internet and have it shipped. I’m not sure about this but someone from the wetlands institute said turtles are now illegal to own also in NJ. You may need to get an exotic species license. All turtles are going to need a big amount of space. If you do decided to get one look for a rescue first, and give an animal an good home.

selling turtles is illegal here in NJ so I don’t think you will find a pet store or breeder.

Mudd Turtles are a good choice if you are looking for an aquatic turtle who will stay small. They are very cute and only grow to a carapace of about 4 inches. Check your local animal control online, they should have a section regarding local ordinances applying to exotic ownership. If your local pet store doesn’t carry them, look for reptile shows or dealers online.
