ive heard they can live longer. i just saw a video of a ‘dirty jobs’ episode where a guy holding a HUGE one (the size of a small-medium dog, looked heavy) and he was saying that snapping turtles of that size have been found with musket ball stuck in old injuries, thats pretty old. At least 150.

Those jaws will not …
Those jaws will not take off your finger, that’s just a 6-7 year old wild turtle. They sure will cut your finger up. But it will take another 8-10 years before he will take your finger off. At his age, his jaw pressure cannot cut the bone in your finger. He can cut you to the bone, but not cut or break the bone. In a few years yes. Remember, don’t hold them by the tail, your ripping the joints in the tip of his tail.

Ok, I see it in the video, Vicksburg Mississippi. I trapped near there in the Mississippi but only caught a 10 foot alligator. Well, I was on a large “island” trapping a slough. It was probably a little late in September but also the island was trapped out in the 40’s and 50’s. People hauled turtles off the island with mules in wagons. Great place to restore the population!

Ok, don’t hold them by the tail. Use a back leg. I’ve caught about 400 of them, research. Let me tell you, I’ve never seen one with such a long skull. You’ve got a very unusual specimen. Were you actually on the Mississippi? Captured with a light, or a trap? Very unusual specimen, long long head. Southern Alabama has the longer neck, but yours has the longest head I’ve ever seen. I’m the guy getting bit from the Youtube video. What part of what state did you catch that turtle in?
